Summerhouse is a digital magazine highlighting D.C.’s creative underground.
D.C. is a city best known for its politics and monuments. But residents know it’s so much more—a place where people come together to express themselves through art, music, fashion, sideshow, and comedy, just to name a few. This project started in 2017, as a way of celebrating D.C.’s distinctive DIY culture through independent, magazine-style journalism, brought to life by original photography, illustrations, and multimedia.
In summer 2019, we raised $4,924 (after fees and taxes!) to bring Summerhouse to life. We created this website from scratch; published a Kickstarter-exclusive print zine with its own unique collection of offline stories; shipped rewards all over the world; and most importantly, sent more than $3,900 (~80% of what we raised) back to our contributors. (You can learn more about our fundraising journey from DCist, The Kojo Nnamdi Show, The DC Line, and 730DC.)
Thank you to our community partners—730DC, Patrick’s Pet Care, and MakeOffices—who provided crucial support.
And thank you for coming to visit! Make yourself comfortable and stay as long as you’d like.
P.S. When possible, we’ve updated stories to reflect the ongoing pandemic. If you read about something you’d like to participate in, check the organization’s website/social media for the latest information!
